A secret military team, SG-1, is formed to explore other planets through the recently discovered Stargates. General Hammond summons Colonel Jack O'Neill out of retirement to embark on a secret rescue mission. O'Neill confesses that he disobeyed orders to destroy the Stargate on Planet Abydos, and that scientist Daniel Jackson may still be alive. Arriving on Abydos with his team, O'Neill meets up once again with the scientist, who has discovered a giant elaborate cartouche in hieroglyphics. All signs point to the fact that this is a map of many Stargates that exist throughout the galaxy - a development that makes the dream of the SG-1 team to travel throughout the universe in time a reality. The main reason I watched SG1 was because Richard Dean Anderson was in it. But surprisingly enough it actually brought me hours of enjoyment, not just because of RDA but because of the extensive plot and vast range of story telling methods. SG1 was able too change its tone at will with one minute the situation was life and death and next scene was comic relief moment. SG1 was successful enough too produce 2 spin off TV shows. The story line was written in a way it was enabled too be stretched and be added on too creating 10 season. Most shows have the problem where they keep expanding the universe around them until comes a point where you can't expand any more especially supernatural. The show seemed too struggle from this problem. But in conclusion a wonderful cast and a great story line makes up for any negatives. Though RDA leaves, season 9 and 10 were redeemed by villain. Which the main reason I continued 9&10 was because it was so damn interesting.

So if you have time on your hands this is the show for you.

music 7

sound 7

effects 7 Gradually gets better

acting 9

story 9

personal enjoyment 9

Overall 8/10 Stargate has become what my wife and I would call our "secret shame". Despite not being what anyone would describe as science fiction fans, we own the first eight seasons of SG1 on DVD, as well as the first season of Stargate: Atlantis, and I will freely admit that we cannot wait for the next seasons to be released.

Why? Stargate has managed to do what many series have forgotten - they produce well thought-out, well written episodes, that manage to combine being sufficiently complex (and yet consistent with the show's long-established mythology) for avid fans, while at the same time being entertaining enough to stand on their own.

More importantly (at least to me), Stargate does not take itself too seriously. The writers not only incorporate humour into the show, they are willing to incorporate humour at the expense of the show. It has reached the point where we never watch the show live, because we know that we need to be able to rewind to watch the hilarious moments - always watch the other actor's reactions - worth the price of admission.

If you have never seen this show, put your preconceived notions aside and give it a try. You will not be disappointed.
